Oaklawn was opened in 1935. New additions and renovations were added during the last bond implementation. The main building maintains much of the charm and structure of the original building.
In 2008, Oaklawn became part of Fort Worth ISD innovative program, Public Educators Accelarating Kids. As a PEAK school, new administration and professional staff was assigned to Oaklawn. The goal of PEAK schools is to "reenergize and transform the schools toward a greater academic performance (PEAK program: An overview for parents, Fort Worth ISD, 2008)."
Currently, Oaklawn houses close to 400 students, grades PK to 5th. The school population is 77% Hispanic, 21% African American, and 2% other ethnicities. In addition to regular education, Oaklawn has Dual Language, Bilingual, English as a Second Language, and Inclusion programs as well as a TAP and LINC special education programs. Oaklawn has a staff of close to 30 teachers, 13 teacher assistants, math and literacy coaches, among other professional and support staff.
