The first eight classrooms at George C. Clarke Elementary were erected in 1914. In 1926 four more classrooms were added on the west side of the building. The auditorium (now the library) and four more classrooms were built in 1935. An additional set of four classrooms were added to the building in 1954. In 1988 the cafetorium and wing to the north side of the building were added. The old cafeteria was converted into two early childhood classrooms and the old auditorium was converted into a new library and office area. George C. Clarke also has a Language Center. At present our school has approxamately 600 students.
Who is George C. Clarke?
George C. Clarke Elementary was named after George Carson Clarke an early real estate developer, banker and community leader. Mr. Clarke was born near Fayetteville, Tennessee, September 14, 1871. He is the son of James Carter Clarke and Elizabeth (Allison) Clarke. George was one of four children born to James and Elizabeth. George Clarke came to Fort Worth in 1896 at the age of 25. He was influential in the development of the Hubbard Highlands, Shaw Height and Shaw-Clarke additions. Mr. Clarke was also a director of the Continental Bank of Fort Worth, vice president of the Cattle Men's Trust Company, vice president of Broadmere Land Company and served as a member of the School Board. Mr. Clarke married Miss Fay Clark of Graham, Texas in 1905. Elected to the School Board in 1910, he served as President of the Board from 1913-1916. During his time on the Board eight schools were constructed, including George C. Clarke Elementary. Mr. George Carson Clarke died in 1935 at the age of sixty-four.
