Im 1823 the United States Federal Government built a lighthouse at the end of Stonington Point. Weather and erosion necessitated the lughthouse to be dismantled and moved farther inland in 1840. A second lighthouse was built on the breakwater in the harbor in the mid 1880's.
The Stonington Harbor Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1889. The USGS assigned a benchmark to the lighthouse tower in 1904 when there was no light in the tower. The Stonington Historical Society turned the Lighthouse into The OLd Lighthouse Museum in 1927. The Museum contains marine, historic, and cultural exhibits.
