Horse drawn wagons had to wait while canal boats (pulled by mules) passed under the Exchange Stree lift bridge. The stairway on the left allowed pedestrians to cross without waiting. In 1904, Alling and Cory (now Expedx), on the left, occupied the building where the war memorial now stands.
