Atelier Acacia Sundial, Mont Dauphin, France - Sundials on Waymarking.com

Atelier Acacia, the Acacia Workshop is located in the old Vauban Fortress at Mont Dauphin, in Hautes Alpes, France. This is the workshop for Joseph Auvray who produces custom sundials made from glazed slabs of lava. I visited the workshop while in the area and was pleased to meet Joseph and see the stages in the construction of his sundials.

He starts with pieces of lava, basalt from the Massif Central, as this rock is dimensionally stable through the repeated glazing steps. The first glaze to be fired is the base coat. The pattern with lines letters and images are silkscreened on later, with separate silk-screens for each glazing colour. It is an involved multi step process. Joseph is involved in all stages, from the initial concept, the gnomonic and artistic design, the computer generated CAD drawing for each layer, the silk screening, and multiple firings to melt the glaze layers. Larger designs involve multiple pieces as both thermal stress and the size of his kiln limit the size of individual pieces. The resulting sundials are true works of art and will withstand the rigors of exposure as the inorganic pigments are contained in the glass of the glazed surface. We have seen a number of his sundials in the area and will waymark them in due course.
