A post office was established here in the land of the Creeks on July 6, 1899. The town was named for Tams Bixby, chairman of the Dawes Commission, a very controversial Act that divided up Indian national lands into individual ownership and established the Indian Rolls of ancestorship.
The town was established as a farming area in the rich river bottom of the Arkansas River, and remained so well into the 20th Century. Cotton, wheat and alfalfa, and in the '30s vegetable truck farming, supported the citizens of Bixby. When the oil fields were discovered in 1913, oil became an additional backbone of the community.
Washington Irving camped in the area now known as Bixby, on this trip West in 1832.
The City celebrates each May with the Bixby BBQ and Blues Festival, and in June with the Green Corn Festival.
