With the establishment of the new Melbourne General Cemetery at Fawkner taking place partly due to the disused Somerton Railway Branch, it was decided a Mortuary Train should provide a new service to the Cemetery.
Six cars were built in Newport the Newport Rail yards in 1902-1903, 2 of these serviced Fawkner Cemetery until 1939 with the increased use of the motor vehicle causing decline of use.
They were eventually sold for scrap in 1952.
The car here was extensively rebuilt over a period of 2 years before being placed on display in 1993.
