Mangere Mountain is a volcano, a hilltop park; situated on the shores of the Manukau Harbour about 13 km from the cnetre of New Zealand's largest city — Auckland. The mountain has a turbulent and rich history — volcanic and human. The nature of its 'birth' and the sequence of eruptions can be deciphered from the remaining cone, craters and firepits. There are also many marks on the mountain made by humans. Maori made terraces, pits and tips which are visual reminders of their long occupation of the mountain.
