Rayong Lak Mueang—Rayong Town, Rayong Province, Thailand - Buddhist Temples and Public Shrines on Waymarking.com

A 'City Pillar Shrine' represents the spirit of each province of Thailand, and each Thai province has an official Shrine. In Thai the term is 'Lak Mu-eang' (very difficult for a westerner to pronounce).

Rayong lies in eastern Thailand, approximately 150kms to the south east of Bangkok. The Lak Mueang of Rayong is close to the centre of the city, in a small, rather hemmed in location, a short distance down a side street. The Shrine itself is relatively small, only a few metres on a side, smaller than others I have seen, but it is certainly attractive, well designed and well maintained.

The is a Chinese styled temple immediately behind the Shrine, associated with the Shrine. At the entrance to the Chinese temple there is a shop where visitors can buy religious items to use at the shrine (candles, flowers, ribbons, and so forth).

The Pillar itself is over 2 metres high, gold in colour and sits inside the Shrine. Outside, on the main, northerly facing entrance, there is a small worship area. It has been my experience that there are always Buddhist and cultural icons (elephants, candles, etc.) at the base of the Pillar, but not in this case.

* note: The actual position of the Shrine differs noticeably from my gps spot on google maps. The waymark is to the north (closer to the main road), and across the street from the gps spot. However, the Shrine can be seen from the waymark location.
