A 'City Pillar Shrine' represents the 'spirit' of each town and city of Thailand. In Thai the term is 'Lak Mu-eang' (very difficult for a westerner to pronounce). Each Thai province has an official Shrine, in addition, a number of district capitals (the level of government below a province), also possess a Shrine. These district level shrines are smaller in size than the provincial level Shrine.

The town and district of Tha-Tum is located to the north of the province of Surin, and this district is fortunate enough to possess a Lak Mueang. This is found in the main street of the town, on a traffic roundabout. It is an open structure, ~4m wide, ~8m high, housing the pillar, and a host of Buddhist icons. White and gold are the predominate colours. Well designed and maintained. The Shrine is a place of worship, people do come by to pay their respects.
