In the year 1782 Phraya Khattiya Wongsa (Thao Thon), the first ruler of Roi Et, found the statue of Luang Pho Sangkatjai (the Happy Buddha). He then enshrined the statue Wat Sa Thong (extant at that time) and designated the statue and the Wat as a town treasure. The Wat and the statue are the leading Buddhist site in the small city of Roi-Et.

The Wat itself does not show any sign of great age, it is well maintained and in good condition, but, while it lies near the centre of the city, this part of the city is clearly the 'old town' area. The surrounding buildings show their age.

The Wat itself has the usual range of facilities. Unfortunately, when I visited the Wat, it was closed as there was a ceremony taking place elsewhere in town, thus I was not able to see the statue of the Happy Buddha.
