The monument is a tribute to Swiss poet Heinrich Bosshard, who wrote Semparcherlied here in the 1850's.

The poem "Semparcherlied" became the basis of the Swiss national anthem, and the Swiss Society of America erected a monument to him in 1909 in the park. This granite marker stands in Lindendale Park in Highland, Illinois.
