Appomattox, Virginia is where on April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee, surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The "War Between the States" or American Civil War did not end here, but it did begin the healing process of the nation.

It would be several more months before all of the Armies of the Confederacy would surrender. But this moment in April 1865 would set the standard for the surrendure terms, giving parole to the soldiers, allowing the men who owned horses to keep them and gave them food and transportation home.
