Lock No 34 or Red Lock is one of 44 locks along the Ohio & Erie Canal that lifted canal boats 395 feet between Cleveland and Akron. Although the origin of the name is not certain, Red Lock may have been named after the red-painted lock gates or because red clay was found along the canal in this area. Between 1905 and 1909, the State of Ohio performed repairs with concrete on the lock's original sandstone blocks. The remains of this concrete are still visible. During the great flood of 1913, many of the locks were destroyed thus ending transportation on the canal. After Cuyahoga Valley National Park was established in 1976, the park service acquired the canal lands from the State of Ohio and constructed the ever-popular Towpath Trail the entire length of the park.
