The kings of the Thuringians in the early 6th century possibly held at this easily raised place on the shore of the Ilm already court. In a document provably is, however, only count "Wilhelm von Weimar". He acted as a host of a Conventus magnus which does in the Hus Wymar under emperor "Otto II" was held. From the 10th century a water castle which was used as a ruling seat of the counts by Orlamünde (formerly counts of Weimar) is provable at this place.
In 1299 the presumably mainly wooden castle burned itself down. The Wettiner which established here a new castle arrangement passed over in the possession the castle stable. In case of the big fire 1424 not only the biggest part of Weimar, but also the castle fell victim next time to the flames. "Wilhelm der Tapfere" rebuilt the castle completely as a stone arrangement. 1439 the new building could be covered. The househusband's storm existing still today and the gate construction connecting to it which was called later by the lady-in-waitings living in it mockingly than the 'Bastille' comes from this time.
