The San Luis Valley hosts the annual migration of Whooping and endangered Sand Hill cranes. This migration has become a tourist attration which brings both interest and money into this are of Colorado. Renewed interest in the birds has helped to fund the Alamosa/Monte Vista/Baca National Wildlife Refuge Complex (http://www.fws.gov/alamosa/Cranes.html )as well as other locations near Monte Vista, CO. The mural celebrates the spring migration of the birds with vibrant colors (especially since this mural was painted in 1992!). The artist has captured the grace and regal nature of the birds. The mural was funded by Joyce and Terry Wiley and the building has been renamed the Crane Building.
