On May 7, 1864, Union Generals Grant and Meade and their troops marched south from two intense days of fighting at Wilderness, VA towards Richmond, as did Confederate General Lee and his troops. Not far down Brock Rd., the armies met again at Spotsylvania Court House, and another battle began that lasted for two weeks.
Some of the bloodiest fighting occurred at the Bloody Angle of the Muleshoe Salient. Soldiers fought in close contact for almost twenty hours straight. It was the longest sustained hand-to-hand fight of the entire Civil War.
After the war, many veterans returned to erect monuments at the Bloody Angle, including the 126th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The Ohio monument is a granite block with the letters OHIO in relief on the base at the front and the back. It was placed in 1914 and stands on the field where the 126th fought until running out of ammo.
