King Rama 1 (1782-1809) came to power as the result of a coup against the previous King of Siam (as Thailand was then known), King Taksin (Rama 1's degree of involvement in the coup is indeterminate). Rama 1 first rose to prominence as a military figure who aided King Taksin in the expulsion of the Burmese from the kingdom of Siam. After he had assumed the office of the king, Rama 1 continued Siam's expansion eastwards into Cambodia, and again expelled a Burmese invasion attempt. Perhaps his single greatest accomplishment was the creation of the new city of Bangkok as the capital of the kingdom.
One of his lesser accomplishments was the founding of the town of Buriram in north eastern Siam (perhaps more accurately, he re-founded the town), before he became King.
The statue is magnificent in design and execution. It is on a high plinth, crafted from black stone, and depicts the King on a war elephant. Two sides of the plinth have engraved murals of regal scenes, similar to those found in the nearby Kymer Prasat Phanom Rung. The statue is situated on the south west outskirts of the city, on a traffic roundabout. The statue was completed in 1996.
