Buriram lies on the north east train line, which originates in Bangkok (as do most transport routes in Thailand) and terminates in Udon Thani, on the Thai/Cambodian border. The town train station is of a standard design, and is the epitome of the small town station: two tracks, a worn waiting area, and just a little bit of dust. The train station entrance opens into the (relatively) busy, central area of the town. Outside are tuk-tuks and samloars ready to whisk you away.
There are several trains passing through the station each day. Most are slow, 3rd class trains, taking Thai folk back and forward through Esarn (north east Thailand). This is an inexpensive way to travel, particularly for Thais, who travel free in 3rd class, for non-Thais expect to pay ~0.5c per kilometre—not too expensive, as long as you have the time, do not mind stopping at every village along the route, and bring your own seat pillow (those hard plastic seats).
One thing to note, the train timetables in this region have precise arrival and departure times for each stop, scheduled to the minute, but there is one thing you can be sure of, the trains never run on time.
