The well-preserved seat of Hanover County government retains all of the essential ingredients as well as the atmosphere of a rural Virginia courthouse settlement. Included in the complex is the arcaded courthouse of circa 1735, a major monument to Virginia's colonial architecture. Its surrounding green contains an 1835 stone jail and a somewhat earlier brick clerk's office. Across the road is the rambling wood-frame Hanover Tavern.

Other the Patrick Henry's "Parson's Cause case", a number of important events occurred at the courthouse including:

  • Visited by William Byrd in 1741
  • The famous Presbyterian minister Samuel Davies sent Hanover troops off to the French and Indian war with a sermon at the courthouse
  • The Resolutions of 1774 sent John Syme and Patrick Henry to the Virginia Convention
  • Visited by the Marquis de Chastellux in the fall of 1781 on his way to visit General Nelson at Offley (in western Hanover)
  • Lord Cornwallis and his army camped here in 1781
  • A Resolution condemning the African slave trade as dangerous was passed at this courthouse
  • J.E.B. Stuart received his commission in the Confederate Army at the courthouse and had his cavalry headquarters here during the winter of 1863-64
