Being a reclaimed quarry site the land where this arboretum lies offers a wide range of habitats for wildlife. This sign is inside a small, wooden shelter near the river in the wooded area on the eastern edge of the arboretum.
Habitats include water with lakes, ponds and rivers; wetland, reed beds and drier grassland and woodland. The nearby River Tame was lifeless 20 years ago being a heavily polluted waterway from the industrial waste in the area. Now it is full of life with fish and otters thriving within it.
Brown hares live in the grounds and many birds can be seen. Butterflies and moths with other insects thrive.
The arboretum is carefully managed to conserve this valuable environment; volunteers care for the area. A Wildlife Watch Group for 7-14 year olds encourages children to enjoy the wildlife here and other activities run as advertised. On the other side of the river is the Croxall Nature Reserve.
As the arboretum grows the wildlife will become more established with the trees which commemorate so many lives.
