The University of Wisconsin was a hotbed of often violent anti-VietNam-war protests during the late '60s. Sterling Hall, then home of the physics department, also housed the Army Mathematics Research Center. On August 24, 1970, Sterling hall was bombed by a group of protestors. One person was killed and four injured. It was generally accepted that this effort was a step too far, and the protests subsided for the most part after the bombing.
Karleton Armstrong was later arrested in Canada and convicted of the crime. He served 23 years in the state prison at Waupun. He is now free and runs a small business in Madison.
Sterling Hall was rebuilt and is now the home of the University's Astronomy department.
