Dual standing Grizzly bears have been on the Missouri State Seal since about 1822. However,if the bear statue is indeed a Grizzly its gray tones that blend so well with the state office building color scheme, trick the average visitor into thinking it is a polar bear.
Bernard "Paco" Frazier from Tulsa, Oklahoma carved the bear from a 15-ton block of limestone. Its gray color blends with the color of the 14-story building's gray tones. So it looks somewhat like a polar bear. I am told, however, it represents the mighty grizzly bear. If it has a name I don't know what it is. The bear appears to have his nose in the air and is looking in the direction of the nearby Lewis & Clark Trailhead Plaza statues. If the bear needs a name, I propose "Brutus."
