The AT crosses the highway at Carvers Gap - which is TN143 from Roan Mountain, TN and NC261 from Bakersville, NC. Carvers Gap is a popular destination for the flowering Catawba rhododendron and flame azaleas (see gallery).
There is a pit toilet available at the end of the parking lot.
Northbound it proceeds over natural balds towards Yellow Mountain.
Southbound heads up Roan High Knob past Cloudland Hotel towards Hughs Gap.
