The USDA Plant Materials Building was built between 1935 and 1941, by Civilian Conservation Corps, with adobe blocks made by Hispanic workers hired with Federal Emergency Relief funds.
The building has a flat roof, rounded corners, exposed wooden roof beams and rough carved wooden porches. Build in the Pueblo Revival style similar to Native American southwestern style.
One of 48 nurseries established by the Soil Conservation Service after 1935 it is still involved in the propagation of native plants advantageous to conservation.
