The memorial was placed by Sangamo Electric Company which was a large manufacturing company in Springfield which started in 1899 and produced electric meters, clocks and other electrical appliances. They employed in 1947 but closed in 1977. The memorial honors those from the company who served in the World Wars but did not return.
