At the end of Shelly Beach Parade in Cockle Bay you will locate a large Pohutukawa tree. On landing, Manawatere left his mark in red orchre, on this tree, after travelling from Hawaiiki in a waka (canoe). From Cockle Bay, he then traveled by foot to Maraetai.
The plaque reads:-
Ti Tuhi a Manawatere
(The Mark of Manawatere)
Ko te tauranga tenei o Manawatere.
Tetahi o nga tupuna o Ngaitai o eneirohe.
Ka waitiongaia e ia tona tohu karamea ki runga i te Pohutakawa.
This Pohutakawa marks the landing of Manawatere, an ancestor of the
Ngaitai people. He left his mark in red orchre which is said to colour the flowers each summer.
