This marker commemorates the founding of LeClaire, IL, now a part of Edwardsville, IL. The town was founded by N.O. Nelson in 1890 and named after Edme Jean LeClaire, who had started profit sharing in France. LeClaire was founded with the principles of affordable homes, healthy environment, free educations, many opportunities for recreation and self improvement and pleasant working condition at the N.O. Nelson Manufacturing Company. Nelson implemented profit sharing and employee benefits at his company. The village was annexed into Edwardsville during the Great Depression
