There's an outdoor, twelve foot square checkerboard at
Children's Wonderland in Vallejo, California. There's a nice bench at each end of the board, so that players can sit and ponder their moves!
No one was playing chess on the Tuesday (closed) that I was there, but apparently they do. Pictures on their website show children playing chess.
