Located on Avenida de Berna, the church was designed by architect Pardal Monteiro, also responsible for other well known Lisbon buildings (like the Diario de Noticias newspapers headquarters or some of the main buildings of the University) and is part of the Modernist movement in vogue at the time of its inauguration on 13 October 1938.
The work was awarded with a Valmor Award in 1938, and it's well known for it's stained glass, one of Almada Negreiros's (one of Portugal's most notable artists) masterpieces.
The works of Almada in this church are the stained glass of the "Santíssima Trindade" in the choir zone, the stained glass, mosaics and the Baptistery doors, the windows "Calvário" and "Nossa Senhora da Piedade" in "Capela de Nossa Senhora da Piedade", the stained glass "Nossa Senhora do Carmo "and" Rainha dos Cristãos" in "Capela de Nossa Senhora do Carmo", and the stained glass canopy and the Eucharistic symbols on the Apse.
In the Apse, it should also be noticed the four frescos "Evangelistas", also authored by Almada Negreiros.
About the artist, Pardal Monteiro said: "Stained glass, mosaic, mural painting and even iron, its talent produces works which place him definitely in the first line of the reformers and the drivers of national art (...) The collaboration he provided, ennobled and valued my work, I witness once again my admiration and recognition to the one that Cottinelli Telmo called the most architect of Portuguese painters, Almada Negreiros."
