A maker in the historic district, just before the famous bridge. The marker overlooks a canal, being on the opposite side of the street.

The marker is in good shape but the website is not as there currently appears to be a glitch. The listing date is 1949..I don't think so! It is also listed as missing but it is clearly there. Here is the text:

Ground broken at Bristol for first 18 miles of canal, Oct. 27,1827. Open to New Hope, 1831. At Bristol was one of three toll stations. A tide lock here was the outlet into the Delaware; and the first three of 23 lift locks were near by.
