THE DORNIE PORTAL

At one time this quiet intersection was the center of the busy rural community of Dornie with a sawmill, blacksmith shop, cheese factory, train station, school, store and boarding house. When the sawmill closed in 1893, this village began it's slow decline and final demise as a result of changes in social patterns and transportation as the car brought larger towns within easy reach.

Today this quiet spot along the Delisle river is just off the main highways and still sees passenger trains going between Ottawa and Montreal. The "portal" being the biggest most difficult to miss element marking this ghost town. A quiet spot for a break while touring the Glengarry Highlands.

Further details in this letter to the editor of the Glengarry News, from 1966.
