Surrounding the seal is the motto: "THE NOBLEST MOTIVE IS THE PUBLIC GOOD" with the date in Roman numerals "MDCCCLI" (1851). The seal itself displays two concucopia overflowing with fruits and vegetables. Above are two scenes- one of a farm (with Palomar Observatory in the distance) and another of a Spanish galleon on the sea. The center is dominated by what appears to be a double-edged axe with a banner reading "County of San Diego".

On the pavement next to this seal is another seal representing the badge of the San Diego County Sheriff. (photo included with this waymark).
