Irene is an unusual town in South Dakota in that its boundaries are in three different counties: Clay, Turner, and Yankton.
It had a population of 404 as of July 2008, which reflects a 6.5% drop in population from the 2000 census.
The town was incorporated in 1895 and had been settled by German, Danish, Irish, English, and French immigrants.
