Muskingum College (now Muskingum University) was chartered by the Ohio General Assembly in March 1837. It was funded by a group of New Concord area residents, the Friends of Education. The original building burned in March, 1851. The College Hall was rebuilt by public subscription—primarily from area residents. The third college building, later named Paul Hall, was built in 1873. It is named in honor of Rev. David Paul, college president from 1865 to 1879.
Muskingum University is a private four-year comprehensive college with a strong liberal arts tradition located in New Concord, Ohio. The school colors are black and magenta and the school's mascot is the “Fighting Muskie” (the muskellunge, the largest member of the pike family). The school's motto is "Omni, Trinum, Perfectum", Latin for "all perfect things are three-sided" a reference to both the Christian Trinity and Muskingum's mission to develop their students' minds, bodies and souls. Collectively the school's alumni are referred to as the "Long Magenta Line" and students (both past and present) are known simply as "Muskies". Astronaut John Glenn and actress Agnes Moorehead rank among notable Muskingum alumni.
In June 2009, the institution's name was changed from "Muskingum College" to "Muskingum University".
