A window to another world: The Water Wall at Signature Place
Dramatic. Mesmerizing. Inspiring. Soothing. Astonishing.
Choose your adjective. The water wall at signature place, unveiled in March, has people marveling at both the technical and artistic achievement.
First, the technology.
Consider the mechanics of maintaining the 1000 gallons per minute per horizontal foot flow volume. The plumbing and power systems are necessarily robust...but also capable of very fine level of control of the overflow, harnessing a variety of pump speeds and creating layers of different flows on top of each other. Consider also the scale; soaring six stories into the air, it might be the largest manmade water wall in the world.
Now, consider the art of it.
Quick Facts:
Total structure steel weight: 22,000 lbs.
Total precast weight: 230,000 lbs
Total height: 6 story building (54 ft)
Area of the waterfall: 3,600 sf
Max volume of water on the surface at any given time: 100 gals
Max weight of water on the surface at any given time: 835 lbs
Other fun facts:
The distinctive butterfly V-shape was generated to promote air flow aroung the water wall.
The waterwall pumping capacity is 1,300 gpm, the equivalent to flushing a bathtub in under 5 seconds.
The time taken for a drop of water to travel the length of the water wall is 7.5 seconds.
