Head east from Waipawa along Tamumu Road. This road changes to Pourerere Rd after about 2kms. Turn left onto River Road, then right onto Elthorpe Road. At Elsthorpe village is a fork, the right fork will take you to Kairakau beach, then follow the signs.
Travel time 30 minutes
Ideal for swimming, fishing and surfing.
A clearly sign posted area is available at the end of the beach road for overnight stops for fully self contained motorhomes only.
NOTE: MUST BE SELF-CONTAINED...definitely not for "mattress in the back of a van" type camping.

Fully ‘self contained’ motor homes ONLY are permitted to overnight stay on the area of mown grass at the northern end of Kairakau Beach Road (past the new public toilet) beyond the vehicle turning area plus the small area just before the end of the road. The area allowed to be used is clearly signposted.
Any other form of camping on any other ‘Council’ land at Kairakau Beach is NOT ALLOWED.

Casual campers must notify the Council’s Bylaw Officer of their name, address and contact phone number, their intended location and length of stay. The length of stay is not to exceed seven (7) days.
A camp site must be set up in such a way that there is no interference or damage to sand hills,
trees or other vegetation growth. No permanent structures will be permitted.
Campers must leave the site clean and tidy.

NOTE: This beach also has a popular paying camping ground for other tent and caravan camping.
