From Wikipedia.com:
"Moon trees are trees grown from hundreds of seeds taken into orbit around the moon by Stuart Roosa during the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. As the Command Module Pilot on the Apollo 14 mission, and due to the fact that he was a former smoke jumper, Roosa was contacted by Ed Cliff, who was the Chief of the Forest Service at the time, and who proposed the idea of taking the seeds along. Seeds for the experiment were chosen from five different types of trees: Loblolly Pine, Sycamore, Sweetgum, Redwood, and Douglas Fir."
This tree type is a Sycamore.
Our story:
We have been waymarking for a over a year now and are trying to fill in the "bingo sheet" for different categories. I was very disappointed to find out that we walked within a few hundred feet of a moon tree in New Orleans. Oh well, sometimes that is just the way it goes. When we took our trip to Johnson Space Center, we asked several tour guides if they had heard of the moon trees and were told no every time.
Today we got excited when we checked Wikipedia and saw the moon tree in Plano, we put gas in the JEEP and off we went. We were a little intimidated to ask at the office of Plano High School but they were all very nice and directed us to this silver tree in the space between buildings C and D.
