This is the statue of Tainui who, in Maori mythology, was the beautiful daughter of the Maori chief of Putikituna and it was she who created the lovely Virginia Lake with her tears of sorrow.

The tears of the weeping Tainui formed the lake now known as Virginia Lake. She wept for the loss of her lover.
The bronze statue was erected by the Wanganui Historical Society in memory of local historian Max Smart who often told the story. It features Tainui sitting amongst the birds whose language she learnt to speak.
There is also a plaque explaining the legend of the weeping Tainui.....see photo of plaque.
