This statue was erected and dedicated on July 4th, 1907 in memory of Samuel de Champlain. The town of Champlain is named after Lake Champlain which Samuel de Champlain named after himself as he was the first European to map it. The monument itself has dedications in French and English and describes Champlain's abilities as an explorer and humanitarian. There are pictures on the base that depict Lake Champlain as well as his relations with the Native Americans of the time.
