A building was built in 1872 to house a private collection of books and named the Berkshire Athenaeum. The collection grew an d new building was built in and opened as the Berkshire Athenaeum in 1974 to house the 150,000 item collection. The new Berkshire Athenaeum is located two door away from the old building.
