Mission crosses (Croix de mission) are found in remote mountain villages, high in the French Alps. They are part of the patrimony of the area. These crosses bear the instruments of the passion and crucifixion of Christ. The symbols include the whips, crown of thorns, hammer, nails, sword, lance, ladder and of course the life sized cross. There is no body but sometimes a image of Christ’s face. The sign, INIR is common indicating the justification for the crucifixion "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" etc.
This particular cross is on a trail leading to 'the tomb of the poet" past the hamlet of Prapic, and Montcheny, past the village of Orcières, at the eastern edge of the Champsaur district. The massive mountains of the Hautes Alpes loom above to the north and east. This truly is the end of the road. As usual we ended up here searching for sundials and hiking trails and had a great day.
