About the artist:
Esteban Camacho Steffensen is presently a junior at the Pacific Northwest School of Art in Portland, OR, working for a BFA in Painting. He has lived San Jose, Costa Rica, Eugene and currently in Portland, Oregon.
“My art shows viewers how humans are still intricately connected to nature, despite the fact we often work against it or destroy it. But I attempt to propose solutions and possible paths to return to a dynamic equilibrium with nature. My goal is to create images that give a sense of the constant flow, the give and take, the need to belong on Earth as a living link in a giant chain, which is always breaking and reconnecting itself.”
“My mural can’t change the world physically. What it does is give testament of hope!”

About the mural:
This mural is acrylic paint on 12 plywood panels. It attempts to relate peaceful religious coexistence with the natural environment and landscape.
A winged mountain lion stands on top of the church facade, representing the symbol for Saint Mark. As a mountain lion he protects the Pacific Northwest food chain as he balances the other species below him.
From this temple the mural will vigil (watch over) our community – the children from our preschool, Presbyterian, Jewish and many other families. This humble vigil seeks to warn, protect, guide and nourish others toward wholeness and justice. Our present age and culture calls us, especially, to keep vigil over the inclusivity and equality of all people, the health of our planet, and peace for all nations.
