From the website of the Parramatta City Council:
"History
Based in the heart of the “City of Parramatta”, this 2 storey Victorian Free Classical Civic building was built on the site marked out by Governor Phillip for a market in his plan for Parramatta.
A market fair was held here in 1813. It was later the site of the annual feast for Aborigines first held by Governor Macquarie which continued from 1816-1830. This Town Hall designed by GA Mansfield and built by Hart and Lavors was begun in 1881 and opened in 1883.
The Council Coat of Arms showing Aboriginal spearing eels from the river, appeared over the doorway, and above this was inscribed “Town Hall, CJ Byrnes, Mayor, 1880”.
Various additions have been made to accommodate Council, citizens and visitors but the original building is still serving Parramatta as its Town Hall.
Today
Over the years, extensive renovations had changed the character of one of Sydney’s finest Town Halls, but today much of the building has been historically restored back to its original grandeur state.
Located in the heart of Parramatta City, this majestic venue has been restored with meticulous detail and provides the perfect venue for exhibitions, fairs, product launches, conferences, seminars and general meetings for up to 450 people. It also comfortably seats 250 people for the more formal wedding reception or official ceremony with additional upstairs gallery seating for a further 100 people. Located 1 min walk from St Johns Cathedral and a few minutes from Westfield and Parramatta Train /Bus Station its locality, access to facilities, disabled access/amenities to the ground floor, makes it an ideal venue for any type of occasion. "
The Parramatta Town Hall both externally and internally makes an interesting comparison with the Sydney Town Hall (WM799M). It is much smaller and it maybe lacks some of the grandeur of Sydney's natural sandstone finish building, although it may appear somewhat pretentious in its own right. But inside, there are embellishments in the walls and ceiling which perhaps are similar to the larger Sydney building.
The emblem of the council of the native fishing with a spear seen on the front of the building is still the emblem (or in similar style) 130 years later (as at the time of writing) for the Parramatta City Council.
