The Gothic Barbican (Barbakan), pre-gate fortification element of the former Zatec Gate (Zatecká brána), is one of well preserved parts of the medieval defence system of the Royal Town Kadan. The Barbican belongs to the second fortress zone, which strengthened the inner town's fortification line. The Barbican made possible a side shooting which is clear from the presence of key-hole loopholes.
A barbican is a fortified outpost or gateway, such as an outer defense to a city or castle, which was used for defensive purposes. Usually barbicans were situated outside the main line of defences and connected to the city walls with a walled road called the neck.
