In the rolling fields in Spotsylvania County, VA not far from Rt. 3, tucked in a little grove of trees is a small Civil War-era cemetery with 11 graves. Members of the McGee family who lived in this area during the War Between the States are buried here.
Reuben McGee was the patriarch. Among his 5 sons were a Confederate soldier with the 30th Virginia Infantry, 2 Confederate deserters, a Union spy, and Absalom, who was an Union sympathizer and whose nearby house served as a field hospital for Union Gen. Hooker's retreating troops during the May 1, 1863 battle at Chancellorsville. Absalom, his wife, 2 daughters, and a daughter-in-law are among those buried here.¹
The cemetery is surrounded by a wire fence and a broken-down iron gate. There is a historical placard on the adjacent path with an overview and early photo and a guide to the graves. It can be accessed along a self-guided trail
on the First Day of Chancellorsville battlefield. A small visitors area and parking are found here:
