The museum started in 1898 as group of artists who came together to form The Art Club of Erie. The organization met at the local public library for 50 years. The members held exhibitions, presented and discussed papers on subjects of artistic importance, and raised funds to acquire the artworks which are still displayed. The Art Club moved, together with the Erie Public Museum, to West Sixth Street in the 1940s. The club acquired a home of its own, adjacent to it's then current property, in 1956. The building and the organization gradually became known as the Art Center and with some funding got it's first professional Director in 1968.
As the Erie Art Center grew it expanded to include year-round exhibitions, education programs (1969), a program for collecting works, a traveling exhibition program (1973), a darkroom (1973), frame shop (1975), studios (1977-81), and a Contemporary Music Series (1982). In 1983 the move was made to State Street, it's current location, and the organization's name changed to Erie Art Museum.
