The project involved upgrading 1350m of road, including the 655m Sea Cliff Bridge.
The judges called the LHD Link Alliance construction of the Sea Cliff Bridge an outstanding engineering feat. They were impressed by the innovative design of an Australian first – combining a curved balanced cantilever bridge with an incrementally launched bridge on a curve. They also noted the great attention placed on aesthetics, and the use of ground probing radar to ensure worker safety on the project.
The Sea Cliff Bridge replaced a section of Lawrence Hargrave Drive that was permanently closed in August 2003 due to regular rock falls. A public outcry emerged over the road closure. The Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA) signed an alliance agreement with private sector
companies on 8 December 2003 to re-connect Lawrence Hargrave Drive between Coalcliff and Clifton. The new Sea Cliff Bridge opened on December 11, 2005 and is a balanced cantilever bridge, located in the northern Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. The $52 million bridge links the coastal villages of Coalcliff and Clifton. Featuring two lanes of traffic, a cycleway and a walkway, the Sea Cliff Bridge boasts spectacular views and is a feature of the scenic Lawrence Hargrave Drive.
