The coat of arms for Cardinal Glennon like for all Cardinals has a red galero (wide-brimmed hat) with 15 tassels on each side. The escutcheon along with motto are unique for each Cardinal. The escutcheon consists of one large cross on the left wit four smaller crosses along with what appears to be an urn on the right.
Cardinal Glennon was the Archbishop of St. Louis when St. Philippine Duchesne was beatified in 1940 and was a strong proponent of the construction of her shrine. Cardinal Glennon was only a Cardinal for 18 days and died in Ireland (his home country) on his trip home after being made a Cardinal in Rome. He had been a priest for 61 years, a bishop for six days short of 50 years, archbishop of St. Louis for 42 years. He had ordained some 4,700 young men to the priesthood and consecrated seven bishops, celebrated mass more than 22,000 times.
The location of the coat of arms is symbolic being located on the over the east entrance to the shrine and viewed while one looks west, below the coat of arms is a mosaic of St. Louis also symbolizing the west. The other entrance has the coat of arms of Pope Pius XII and a mosaic of St. Peter symbolizing Rome.
