Running about 201 metres No. 12 Tunnel is goes by the name Poolburn No. 1. The interior is a mix of schist stone blocks, bricks, and exposed rock making it an interesting mix of textures.
About 200 metres off the Otago Central Rail Trail from the north portal is a historic site where the tunnel workers camped while creating both No. 12 and No. 13 tunnels.
